Two letters penned in the.3 tiny, but neat hand of Rabbi A. L. Mayer. From Easton, Pa. (near Phila.). Each to Isaac Leeser: (1) Easton, Jan. 30, 1863. Two pages: “I am sending you a sermon [not enclosed] which I delivered before a mixed audience. Maybe you like it and find it worthwhile to print in your journal. I have written up much of another speech which I delivered on Succoth because I was interrupted too many times. I will bring this sermon personally and let you read it. I treated this sermon from an educational point of view…if you happen to know of a good position for me please keep me in mind because I intend to leave [soon]”…also sends money he owes for the journal. Entire second page of letter is “postscript” describing writing and changing a teaching course in both French and German languages advising that he had earlier “acquired a nice bit of money for. If I could find a buyer in Phila. I would sell this first work. If necessary the German lessons and rules could be translated in English which might be an inducement for a buyer…will be glad to send you a sample page…am sure you will like the method used…” (2) Letter from Easton, Dec. 2, 1862. Single page: “I hope you don’t have any bad feelings for I have not written for quite awhile. You are right to call me ungrateful.” Requests Leeser’s forgiveness: “a few days ago I got your journal by mail. These simpletons who know my address cannot understand that I could get mail not only from Maintz [Germany] and NY but also from Phila…have in mind to pay you a visit soon and will pay my debt at same time. …Give my regards to Frankel and Morais.” BOTH LETTERS written in German language with his signature and accompanied with modern English translations. By 1864 Mayer had left Easton and ministered to a congregation in Syracuse, N.Y. Normal aging; both exc.
