Very rare and historically important 4 page printed broadside in dual English-German language announcing the establishment of the famous: “HOSPITAL FOR ISRAELITES IN PHILADELPHIA” in bold fancy lettered headline, dated August 18, 1864. A single folded leaf printed on both sides with the English text facing the German opposite it on each side; folds to 5 x 9 (4 pages). Announces the reasons for formation of the hospital: “…Within the last six months three Israelites of this city (Phila) have died in Christian hospitals without having enjoyed the privilege of hearing the [Hebrew words for ‘Schm’a Yisrael’] the watch word of their faith and nation…reflects the greatest discredit on so large a Jewish population as that of Phila. to force friendless brothers to seek in sickness…the shelter of un-Jewish hospitals to eat forbidden food, to be dissected after death…” and much more. Just lightest aging, but exc. +. Singerman No. 1818 (only two copies reported and one of those was included within a set of the Hospital Association reports). Rare; important
