Neatly penned letter from former Rabbi A. Guinzburg to William B. Hackenberg, executor of Isaac Leeser’s estate. From Rochester, NY May 18, 1868. 3 pages. “…Received your note in which you informed me I owe for subscription to Occident $22. I consider it my duty out of respect to you and the other executors of the late Rev. Mr. Leeser to state that this charge is entirely mistaken and I am highly surprised at this demand. Nineteen years ago when I was Rabbi of Baltimore Mr. Leeser paid me a visit; we became acquainted and he offered to send me graciously his periodical and requested me to send him now and then some article, which I did. During this whole time I never was asked for any pay and never did pay anything, for otherwise my limited income would not have allowed me to be a subscriber…reading the sad news that my good old friend was taken from this life and his periodical shall be continued by Mr. Sulzberger I thought first to inform that gentleman to discontinue sending it. As I have not the pleasure of being acquainted with him and of course cannot expect of him to send me [as Leeser did]…but after mature reflection I thought this might be considered an offence against the successor, but under no consideration would my pecuniary circumstances allow me to pay for all the Jewish papers which are sent to me…” It is in the hand of and beautifully signed “A. Guinzburg, per Tillie Guinzburg.” Bold light penciled notation by Hackenberg at the bottom “ALL RIGHT…WBH.” Exc.
