Neatly penned letter from Scranton, Pa. July 25, 1880 signed only “Jacob” and addressed to “Dear Mayer.” 2 ½ pages: “…I am spending Sunday up here in a dull American fashion. Emanuel Cohen is up here at present and I spent some time at his house. I see by the papers that Miss Bernheimer has had Mayer Kauffman arrested for trying to blacken her reputation by accusing her of being in the conspiracy to assassinate him. He is under $2,000 bail. I gather…that he has temporarily skedaddled. Joe is also away from home which makes our family rather small. Having some photographs taken…hope you will too in Europe…” and more about his brother’s pending trip to Europe. Exc. (suspect the letter was written to Judge Mayer Sulzberger).
