Single page; 8 x 10 typed letter on letterhead “THE AMERICAN HEBREW…PUBLICATION OFFICE…NEW YORK” with penned autograph of “PHILIP COWEN” the editor and publisher (his name also on letterhead) to Mayer Sulzberger of the Board of the J. P. S. Nov. 15, 1895. Reminds him that the “American Hebrew” (a weekly) “…issues an annual Book number…and we would very much like to have a page ad of the Society’s publications. In previous years we have written about it and [once] were told the ad could not be given to us [because] other Jewish papers would also ask for it. It [is] simply ridiculous to give such an excuse [as no] other paper issues a book number. If any did, there would be some justice in this position. …Specially anxious to have the ad…as its absence in previous issues has been commented unfavorably on by other publishing houses [offering logical reasons…especially the lack of recognition ‘by our own people’]…others have spoken of the niggardly policy of a society that does not support its leading journal…we offered to take the ad at the nominal sum [less then anyone else and gives comparisons]…” Writes also of other influential J.P.S. officers, such as Cyrus Adler, that he had written to and who all felt he was justified in being given the ads. “We begin next week publication of the translation of Prof. Cornill’s ‘Humanitarianism of the Old Testament’ which ought to be published by the J.P.S…will send Dr. Leipiziger a duplicate copy of the manuscript and presume he will write or speak to you about it.” Cowen added a few words in pen where typist made errors or omitted a minor word.
