His first congregation was Madison, Indiana, which he served 1854-1858, then becoming rabbi to congregation in Chicago which ultimately changed in 1861 to the famous Sinai Congr. becoming its first rabbi. He pleaded for the union of the diverging forces in Judaism and maintained the right of religious autonomy for individual and congregation. In 1864 he became rabbi of Zion congregation; also active in the work of the Jewish Pub. Society of America…and much more. 1 ¼ page letter (single sheet) in his small, neat, easily read hand with full signature, to Mayer Sulzberger as “Chairman of the Pub. Committee.” From Chicago, Dec. 10, 1896. Writes regarding Rabbi Maurice Fluegel (then rabbi of Baltimore and noted author on scholarly subjects) “…Fluegel has requested that I should exert myself in his behalf and induce the Pub. Committee to take his published books, all or in part, at a fair estimate and then also publish his manuscripts…in complying with the request of Dr. Fluegel I am writing…have nothing particular to add. You and the other members…are competent to form your own opinion…and own conclusions…if you deem it proper to bring matter before a committee…before final action is taken I request, as a personal favor, not to be appointed as a member of such a committee.” Exc. With photostat of a fine bio sketch of Felsenthal.
