Single page neatly penned letter to Judge Sulzberger in Philadelphia (as president of the Jewish Pub Society of America) from A. and C. Black, Schechter’s agents or attorneys on their printed letterhead, from London Jan. 25, 1896 (Schechter at the time was teaching at Cambridge Univ.): “…We expect to have this book…STUDIES IN JUDAISM…ready in a month from now and feel obliged if you will communicate with Macmillan & Company (with NY address) our American agents regarding it. We feel sure they will do all in their power to meet your views…” (See Singerman No. 5085; was published later that year by both Macmillan and the J.P.S.) ACCOMPANIED BY single page typed letter Nov., 1895 on letterhead of “Macmillan & Co.” in which A. and C. Black also appears as their agent. To the J.P.S. regarding their publications: “…if you will do us the favor of sending such of your publications and sample copies you wish handled in London stating terms…we shall be glad to begin negotiations…[etc.].” This letter obviously the forerunner to Black’s letter about the Schechter book.
