Prof. Charles Gross at Harvard University writes to Judge Sulzberger of the Jewish Pub. Society from Cambridge, Mass. May 23, 1897. Two page penned letter in his hand with fine signature: “I regret I cannot devote much time to Bonner’s ‘History of the Jews’ because I have not been feeling well…and this is busiest time of the year for me. I am returning [it] after having read only three chapters. The author’s style is attractive and he writes in a liberal spirit and with sympathy for the Jews. If we published the volume, the chapters on Christ would doubtless have to be abridged and revised. On the whole, the little I have read in Bonner’s book has impressed me favorably although I noticed some errors in his statement of facts.” Exc. Gross was active in Jewish life; lectured at an important London exhibition on ‘the Jews in England and Middle Ages’” and influential in the American Jewish Historical Society.
