Original first edition inscribed by him of “FORTY CENTURIES OF INK…OR, A Chronological Narrative Concerning Ink and its Backgrounds” by David N. Carvalho. Pub.New York, 1904 by the Banks Law Pub Co. 374 pages; 6 x 9. The son of the famous Jewish American artist and Charleston, S.C. communal leader Solomon N. Carvalho, David took up the profession of handwriting expert in 1872 and during the next 50 years was called upon as expert witness in many famous trials. He made many important discoveries, especially in photographic processes. This book was the first important history of ink and a major study for determining forgery. Fine, original old penned inscription at top of title page to Charles A. Crampton [of the U.S. Treasury Dept.] “from his friend David Carvalho, April, 1904.” Somewhere along the line (probably when Crampton’s family sold the book) there was added a wide, dark gray brush mark meant to obliterate the inscription; however, it’s much lighter then the ink itself and the inscription can be clearly made out. Exc. + inside. Just the inner front cover is weak on the hinge and on the inner rear cover hinge has come loose, but the cloth hard cover binding all intact showing shelf wear and rubbing at the top of the spine. With fine bio sketch of Carvalho.
