“JEWISH AVIATORS IN THE WORLD WAR [1914-18]” (“Judische Flieger Im Weltkrieg”) by F. U. Sheilhaber; published Berlin, 1924 “For the Jewish National League of Combat Soldiers” (“Dem Reichsbund Judischer Frontsoldaten”). 124 pages; 6 ½ x 9 ½; well illustrated at least 24 fine photo illus (some portraits others with their airplanes) of Jewish pilots flying for Imperial Germany 1914-1918. It’s intriguing to note that a few Jewish aviators are shown in their planes which carry the insignia of a large Swastika…but this was well before Nazis Germany era and the Swastika was merely an ancient symbol and its 4 “arms” were directly opposite directions to that similar symbol later adopted and became to indicate evil personified. Illustrated also are certificates for one of those pilots who won the “Blue Max” and another equally high award for heroism. German text. It is suspected many other Jewish names will be found when translated. Hard board covers. These Jewish aviators, especially those with the highest awards were stricken from all mention and all military rolls after 1933 and Germany’s descent into fascism. Quite likely any of these books existing at that time were destroyed. A significant artifact and volume of military Judaica. Exc. + inside; Slightest aging and minor shelf wear to corners but fine. ACCOMPANIED BY a rare, original c. 1917 photograph of Lieut. Wilhelm Frankl in uniform wearing his “Aviator” insignia and the “Blue Max” suspended by ribbon at collar. 3x5 with postcard reverse. This is authentic c.1917 and these photos (with German caption) were very popularly sold during the era throughout Germany. Exc+.
