MEARS, Otto (1840-1931) A Russian Jew born in 1840, Mears came to California alone when just ten years of age. Unable to speak English in a strange land, he began selling newspapers and doing odd jobs. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 1st California Volunteers and served for a time under Kit Carson in the Navajo War. Developed roads, a sawmill, a gristmill and two newspapers after the Civil War in Colorado. Helped to rescue the women captives of the Meeker Massacre of 1879. Document Signed, “Otto Mears”, 1p. folio, October 1892, being a bill for voucher of materrials for the “D and R.G. R.R. Co.” of Denver. Fine.
