JAMES GUTHRIE (1792-1869) railroad promoter and builder, Sec’y of the U.S. Treasury under Pres. Franklin Pierce (1853-1857) and U.S. Senator from Kentucky 1865-1868. Original penned autograph signature as Sec’y of Treasury. Single page from “Treasury Dept.” July 20, 1853 to the collector of U.S. Customs in Fall River, Mass. regarding approval of the nomination for an “Inspector” for that U.S. Customs office. Exc. +. Guthrie also served in both houses of the KY legislature. His business success was spectacular and his fortune gained was immense. He was considered the “foremost citizen of Louisville” serving also on their city council and many other important posts. Exc. Accompanied with two bio sketches of his life……………
