A small archive consisting of (19) manuscript letters, 1853-61, written by various individuals connected with the St. Louis Cotton Factory, Missouri. The correspondence was sent to P. W. Whitin & Sons of Massachusetts, cotton machinery makers, and pertains to the purchase of textile equipment. Many of the letters were sent from Adolphus Meir & Co. and appear to be ALSs by St. Louis Cotton company president, Adolphus Meir. Two letters by John Rust (company treasurer) are on letterhead for the firm. The letters are mostly brief, but contain important early information on Missouri textile manufacture. A Sept. 12, 1857 letter contains an order for five 35 inch Pickers; six Throstles and 8,000 bobbins. Other orders pertain to crown wheels for throstles; and travellers. An 1858 letter queries whether Whitin makes "any seamless Bag Looms to weave bags 22 in wide." Most of the letters are on lightweight stock, some blind embossed (faint), "Adolphus Meir & Co. St Louis". Also included is a 20th letter, an 1859 inquiry letter from Wyman Remick & Co. regarding a cotton batting machine. A few letters with ink blurring though entirely readable. Otherwise VG condition.
