June 6, 1900 was the beginning of the Oklahoma Land Lottery.The Jerome Commission met with many chiefs who were from three tribes, the Kiowas, the Comanches, and the Apaches. Two new land districts were drawn on the map in the Oklahoma Territory. The northern area was called the El Reno District. The southern area was called the Lawton District. The actual drawing took place in the town of El Reno. The drawing took four days. Over 100,000 people were at El Reno on the first day of the drawing. A total of 500 names were drawn on the first day. Then 2,000 names were drawn every day for the next three days. These scarce photographs document this significant event.
