BOUTWELL, George S. (1818-1905). Former Massachusetts Governor who became U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Grant in 1869. Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo. S. Boutwell” 1p. quarto, June 5, 1857, addressed to Francis Gardner in Boston, and reads in part: “...I have, by accident, allowed your very kind invitation...to lie on my table unacknowledged...I could not make my engagements yield to my desire to be with you; but I have had the anticipated pleasure of hearing good accounts of the day...” Fine.
