MADISON, James (1751-1836), 4th President of the United States (1809-1817) a primary mover behind the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Madison imprinted many of his ideas on the final document and has been called the Father of the Constitution.Autograph Endorsement Signed, “James Madison” 1p. folio on partly-printed document, July 29, 1803, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and reads in part: “...Be it known...before me Nicholas Diehl, Junr...personally appeared Joseph Aukor a Mulatto... who being duly sworn according to law on his solemn oath did declare and say, that he is a native of Westport in Massachusetts and a citizen of the United States, that he is aged forty one years, of the height of five feet seven inches has tied wooly hair yellow complexion black eyes has lost the thumb and two fingers on his left hand...and that he is a free man...” With Endorsement by Madison at left margin “I have authroised Joseph Auker to the charge of the Gardner. James Madison.” Some archival repairs, else VG.James and Dolley Madison lived in Philadelphia from 1794-1797, prior to their move to Montpelier. Dolley’s family remained in Philadelphia and Dolley continued to control interest in a home of her late husband there. A wonderful negro related document pertaining to James Madison.
