A superb FOR relic, undoubtedly as President still containing some of his papers! The zippered black leather morocco briefcase measures 15 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 1/2" and bears gilt initials "F.D.R." embossed in 1/2" high letters on the upper part of the front of the case. There is significant wear at the edges with a chip at upperright of the front cover, yet the briefcase remains entirely pleasing and presentable. Within are five pages of typed notes, one page dated May 2, 1938 and bearing a statement of California Sen. Sheridan Downey calling for the support and re-election of Roosevelt as President. Another page bears a recap of a Apr. 30, 1932 newspaper article in which Downey had also voiced his support of Roosevelt. The other three pages of text set forth the principal points of attack, mainly alleged ties to Tammany Hall, made by ex-Sec. of the Treasury William J. McAddo against Roosevelt in speeches made by him in 1932 in support of John N. Gamer's bid for the presidential nomination. Not surprisingly in the world of politics, it would be McAddo who would pledge California's delegates to F.D.R. at the 1932 Convention, guaranteeing him the nomination, and Gamer would end up serving as F.D.R.'s vice president. From the James Roosevelt sale of his family's personal effects, with original auction ticket, paid receipt, and a copt of a letter from James Roosevelt to the original buyer of the briefcase mentioning the briefcase and the typed notes found within. A historic relic, and an essewntial for the FOR collector!
