Autograph Letter Signed, “ME Swan” 2p. quarto, Philadelphia, September 27, 1837, with integral leaf addressed to his sister in Gettysburg, it reads in part: “...There has been great rejoicing among the whigs here on account of their victories in Kentucky, Tennessee, &c. They fired two salutes one of one hundred guns one of 300 guns they had a ship decorated wtih a great many flags and towed down the river by two steamboats and back again and at night they paraded through the streets with lanterns and flags perhaps you heard of it. The Horticultural society had an exhibition in the Masonic Hall last week I was there they had a great variety of Fruits, flowers plants & c. The fruit looked very nice but they were not permitted to take them. There was such a number of people there that if they were they would soon have disappeared. They had a monument of deliahs most as high as the ceiling (say 30 ft) with birds perched on them and the United States Bank in minature. It was worth seeing, I don’t think that you have any thing fo the kind in Gettybsurg. There has been several arrivals of Indians here. They are dressed in the Indian style and painted they have their bows and arrows tomahawks &c. with them. They are going to Washington to sell their land I believe...” About VG.
