Autograph Letter Signed, “H.E. Scott” 1p. quarto, on Union and Central Pacific Trans-Continental Line lettersheet, San Francisco, California, August 13, 1872, and reads in part: “...Some five years ago a man by the name of Livingston drew from Cornelius Vanderbilt on a forged check seventy five thousand dollars & was arrested convicted & sent tot he penitentiary for a term of four years. During his impisonment he was taken sick & died in prison, but before his death he made out a very blind diagram of the location where he had secreted $52,000 of 5-20 7 per cent government bonds together with two derringers a diamond ring & c in the state of Louisiana & from that diagram which was sent by his wife here to a man to decipher I can trace the place in one day if there...” VG.
