THE PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL & WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, Jan. 23, 1766 Almost the entire front page is taken up with three editorials from England which are actually supportive of the American colonists, with text including: " ... The North Americans ... are yet a rough & hardy people uneffiminated by the luxury & uncontaminated with the vices that are preparing the inhabitants of the mother country to become slaves. They have a strong passion for freedom ... " Also a fascinating & prophetic statement: "Little doubt can be entertained that America will in time become the greatest & most prosperous empire that perhaps the world has evernseen. "Also: "the North Americans now say & write that they have ever been toiling for the benefit of the Mother Couniry ....let honest means be applied for getting rid of those incumbrances & taxes " ... and so much more. Some fascinating reading! Half of page 2 is taken up with yet another nice letter, beginning "It is of great importance that the lovers of liberty be convinced that if Great Britain should push matters to the last extremity to execute the Stamp-Act. we shall be able to maintain our ground & she obliged to desist ... "Page three has some other items supporting the colonists' cause including a list of resolves from a meeting in Connecticut, one being: "That we have ever unmolestedly enjoyed our just liberties & properties as the true born sons off freedom; untl the oppressive & detestable Stamp Act was deeply formed & fatally levelled at the very root & foundation of al lour dearest rights & enjoyments in life. " Folio-size, 4 pages plus a "Supplement" sheet. Light watersiaining, heavier on the Supplement. A great issue!
