John Augustine Washington (1821-1861). Confederate lieutenant colonel and aide de camp to General Lee killed in action at Rich Mountain, VA, in 1861. The grandnephew of George Washington, he inherited Mount Vemon and in 1858 sold it to the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association which owns it today. ALS, Ip, 8"x5~", Mt. Vernon, Jan 6, 1853. To Dr. Leadbeater in Alexandria, in part, "Please prepare and send down to me the following recpt [sic] ... " Thereafter he lists his own recipe for mash containing bergamo~ lemon, lavender orange flower water and "a little Musk ... all in ~ gallon Alcohol. I am very respectfully .... " Darkly penned and signed. Addressed on verso near docket. Light general toning, darker at left edge; else Fine.
