The Houston Tri-Weekly Telegraph. Houston, Texas, April 19, 1865, Vol. XXXI, No. 11, 3898. Texas had not yet received the word of Lee's surrender as in this issue dated April 19th the editor proclaims that l “The dispatches which we publish are sufficient to assure us that great disasters have overtaken our armies in Virginia under Gen. Lee. The extent of these disasters cannot yet be estimated with any confidence. Our information is altogether from Yankee sources. There is not only the exaggeration which is natural even when falsehood is not designed but the exaggeration which has been a part of their system throughout the war not to admit defeat and always to magnify victories .. (which is their) strongest motive at the present time." The Lone Star state simply refuses to acknowledge the possibility that Lee may have surrendered in Virginia. A moving letter from Wharton's Cavalry can be found on page two as he states that although they have undergone great trials they are reorganized and ready for battle. The only thing missing is Gen. Wharton as he had been killed earlier, and therefore the Cavalry pleads for "another" Gen. Wharton to step forward. In Carolina news Gen. Johnston is reported to be fending off Sherman's attacks in front and on the flank and has ordered Carolina to prepare to receive 5,000 prisoners. The fate of Mobile, Alabama is chronicled here. As Union ships and soldiers are moving into position to overrun the city.
