Exceptionally rare United States Mint bronze medal struck by resolution of Congress, February 24th, 1873, struck for (but not presented to) the ten men who rescued some 32 passengers from the wreck of the steamer Metis which sunk August 31, 1872 off Long Island Sound killing 120 others. Designed by Augustus St. Gaudens, obverse shows an image ofCapt. Jared Randall and others in a rescue boat, one of whom grapples a woman around her hips as he snatches her from the water.Verso bears a wreath with dedication. Some wear, slight pitting, otherwise fine.
