Manuscript Document Signed, "Elizabeth McDowell" 1p. quarto, October 15, 1855, Bourbon County, Kentucky, and reads: "...I, Elizabeth McDowell do hereby set free and Emancipate my Mulato girl by the name of Ceiley and authorize the Judge of the Bourbon County Court to grant to her a certificate of Emancipation and send her out of the state in the state of Ohio, with her Aunt Sally..." Witnessed by two others. ...plus; Tintype of a Negro woman, c. 1860. Both Fine.In 1856 Margaret and Robert Garner, escaped slaves, were captured in Cincinnati, Ohio after fleeing slavery in their home state of Kentucky. Margaret killed one of her daughters rather than have her return to slavery and the ensuing case received enormous publicity and became a test of the newly strengthened Fugitive Slave Law. The story was later fictionalized in Toni Morrison's novel Beloved.
