Carte de visite of Sojourner Truth, seated with small table at left, and caption at bottom "I SELL THE SHADOW TO SUPPORT THE SUBSTANCE. SOJOURNER TRUTH." 1864. Small crease at top right corner, else near Fine. Wonderful tones.Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was the self-given name, from 1843, of an American abolitionist born into slavery in New York. (Her original name was Isabella Bomefree, later she changed it to Baumfree; some sources list her name as Isabella Van Wagener.) She eventually ran away from her master after he reneged on a promise to emancipate her with the end of slavery in New York in 1828. Later in life she became a noted speaker for both the Abolitionist movement and the women's rights movement. Truth's most famous speech, "Ain't I a Woman?," a short but well pointed commentary.
