A rare complete run of four (4) issues of Union army newspapers, entitled: GRANT'S PETERSBURG PROGRESS. The inaugural issue is dated April 3, 1865 and is printed as a broadside while issues dated April 5, 7, and 10, 1865 are printed on both sides. These newspapers were printed on the presses of Petersburg's Confederate newspaper, "The Daily Express" and are from the personal archive of Captain Charles McCreery, 8th Michigan Volunteers, who was the Yankee newspaper's publisher and assistant editor. The April 3, 1865 issue proudly proclaims in the first column, reading: "PETERSBURG OURS! WE ARE HERE!! HALLELUJAH...", and gives many fascinating details related to the capture of Petersburg. The other issues contain great reports on the collapse of the Confederate government, and of the unfolding events surrounding the collapse of Lee's army as Grant pursued him to Appomattox Court House. Some interesting content include an 'Auction Sales' advertisement which, reads, in part: "...To be sold very cheap (if not badly sold already) all that singularly, ineligible and worthless property known as THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY. For particulars apply to Jefferson Davis Richmond, Va…". Predictably, the final issue details Lee's surrender as well as containing a 'Wanted Ad' for Jeff Davis. Also, included is an original issue of the: The Daily Express, March 25, 1865 which also came from the personal effects of Captain McCreery that was most likely used by him as a model for the printing of Grant's Petersburg Progress. All near fine. A rare chance to acquire a complete set of newspapers of which no other complete set is known.
