Close Up of the ConspiratorsAlbumen photograph by Alexander Gardner of the Lincoln Conspirators hanging at the end of a rope, 8-3/4"x6-1/4", taken July 7, 1865. This wonderful image depicts the four hooded conspirators, Mrs. Surratt, David Herold, George Atzerodt, and Lewis Thornton Powell Payne, hanging at the gallows as they are surrounded by a large crowd of witnesses, soldiers and officials, including General Hartranft who read them the death warrant only moments before. Small 1/4" tear at bottom margin, affects nothing, else Fine.Alexander Gardner's photographs of the execution are considered the first news photographs in American history. Gardner was granted by the Federal government sole photographic rights to the execution, which was an extremely carefully orchestrated event, for which tickets were hotly contested.
