Partly-printed Confederate Parole, 2p. oblong octavo, Provost Marshal's Office, June 14, 1865, Head Quarters, Point Lookout, Maryland, being a 'Certificate of Release of Prisoner of War' and reads "I hereby Certify, That Ferdinand M. Kesler of the County of Botetourt, State of Va. Prisoner of War, has this day taken the Oath of Allegiance to the United States, and has subscribed to the same in the books of this Office, and also on the back of this Certificate..." with verso reading "I F.M. Kesler do solemnly swear that I will support, protect, and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States against all enemies, whether domestic or foreign; that I will bear true faith, allegiance, and loyalty to the same, any ordinance, resolution, or laws of any State, Convention, or Legislature, to the contrary notwithstanding...I take this oath freely and voluntarily, without any mental reservation or evasion whatever..." Signed at bottom by Ferdinand M. Kesler. Fold separations from being carried as identification by Kesler, else about VG.Ferdinand M. Kesler, served with the 20th Virginia Battalion of Heavy Artillery during the defenses of Richmond, until his capture at Burkeville, Virginia on April 6, 1865. He was confined at Point Lookout from April 14, 1865 to June 14, 1865 and released with this document.
