Three personal items owned by novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870) whose novels first appeared in monthly installments, notably Oliver Twist (1837--9), Nicholas Nickleby (1838--9), and The Old Curiosity Shop (1840--1). Thereafter a great part of his life was spent abroad. His later novels include David Copperfield (1849--50), Bleak House (1852--3), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), Great Expectations (1860--1), and the unfinished The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1870). In addition, he gave talks and readings, and wrote many pamphlets, plays, and letters. His novels have provided the basis for many successful adaptations in the theatre, in the cinema, on radio, and on television.These items include: Leather passport cover, with gold embossed lion and "C.D." produced by the firm of Sangorski & Sutcliffe company of London and sold by E.P. Dutton & Company of New York. VG. This passport cover was used by Charles Dickens while on his tour of the United States 1867-68....plus; Gold 'Ideal' fountain pen manufactured by Waterman's of New York. Fine...plus; Monogrammed silver vinaigrette 'C.D', which was used to house aromatic vinegar and salts, with Autograph Document by Charles Dickens' sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth, which reads "I certify that I gave this silver vinaigrette to Charles Dickens and that it was always used by him when traveling and on his last visit to America and until the day of his death at Gad's Hill 9th of June 1870 and that it has since been used by me and in my possession. Georgina Hogarth." All items are VG to Fine.Georgina Hogarth, a sister of Dickens's wife Catherine Hogarth, remained a lifelong friend in spite of the difficulties in the marriage. When Catherine formally separated from Dickens in 1858 due to an alleged affair, Georgina moved in to care for Dickens's home and youngest children, living with him until his death in 1870.
