WASHINGTON, Booker T. (1856-1915). Educator and Author; Head of Tuskegee Institute. Typed Letter Signed, "Booker T. Washington," 1p. quarto, on official "TUSKEGEE NORMAL AND INDUSTRIAL INSTITUTE" letterhead, May 25, 1900, from Tuskegee. In this important and symbolic letter the famed educator sends a reminder that the advancement for African-American dignity was a struggle even in the lexicon. The letter reads in most part: "...I have followed the suggestion embodied in your letter of May 21st and have written Dodd, Mead and Company regarding capitalization of "N" in the word Negro, not only in your story, but in their magazine as well. I trust that attention may be drawn to the matter and that hereafter we shall see the result of this crusade...."Fine.Under Washington's leadership (1881-1915), Tuskegee Institute became an important force in black education, bringing opportunity to African-Americans who otherwise would have been mired in the cycle of poverty and degradation of the Jim Crow South. A very fine letter indicative of Washington's efforts in the struggle for African-American equality. In very fine condition.
