WILSON, Woodrow (1856-1924) 28th president, guided the country through World War I, under his administration the Underwood Tariff of 1913 was passed as were the Federal Reserve Act and the Federal Trade Commission. Typed Letter Signed, "Woodrow Wilson" 1-1/4p. quarto, on White House stationary, January 15, 1915, addressed to Mrs. JEB Stuart, and reads "I was very much interested indeed in your letter of January thirteenth and wish most sincerely that I could comply with your request about your grandson, but I beg you to believe that it would be a very serious matter if I were to upset the whole practice of the Executive in this matter. Not for a long time have the Presidents conferred direct appointments to West Point. They have merely admitted such candidates as they designated to competitive examination. I feel confident that your grandson can acquit himself with credit and distinction in the examination. I am disturbed by what you say of his nearsightedness. A test of eyesight would be inevitable in any case and I sincerely hope that his nearsightedness is not of such a degree as to bar him from admission, for I should very much like to see him appointed..."
