ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919) Twenty-sixth President (1901-1909). A dynamic man, Roosevelt was Assistant Secretary of the Navy but resigned to volunteer for the Spanish-American War where he led his "Rough Riders" up San Juan Hill. He was Governor of New York and later McKinley's Vice President, becoming President when McKinley was assassinated. Autograph Letter Signed, "Theodore Roosevelt" , 1p. 5-3/4"x3-3/4", on Sagamore Hill stationary, August 12, 1918, and reads in full "Dear Lawrence, I was very deeply touched by the editorial on Quentin, I thank whoever wrote it. Always, Theodore Roosevelt." Fine. During the Second Battle of the Marne in World War I, Quentin Roosevelt's (1897-1918) plane (a Nieuport 28) was shot down over France by the German ace Sergeant Karl Thom, July 14, 1918. He was killed. German propagandists distributed pictures of his body, and then buried his body at the crash site near Coulonges-en-Tardenois. When the World War II American Cemetery was established in France at Colleville-sur-Mer, Quentin's body was exhumed and moved there. He is buried next to his brother Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., who died in France shortly after D-Day.
