(1) "I have been luxuriating in two unpublished reviews of some Christian books, and I had much pleasure in pitching into them."… concludes a subscriber to the Occident, S. Levinson from New York in his letter Aug. 2, 1857 to Isaac Leeser. Single page in neat, penned hand inquiring about payment he sent Leeser and not received reply that Leeser received it. Also: "I promised myself the pleasure of a personal interview with you but present business prevented it." Exc.+; minor short tear on margin. (2) second letter to Leeser from an L. Ulman in Wilkes-barre, Pa Oct. 29, 1857. Short note requesting Leeser to send "Occident" to his new address. Exc. (3) Also: neatly penned letter from Charleston, S.C. March 31, 1854 to Leeser with fine signature "NATHAN NATHANS." Sends subscription to "Occident" and personal note to Leeser. Exc.+ Nathan was one of earliest subscribers to the Occident, 1843 (and so listed in reference to the subject). Born 1783, Nathans a man of means who became a Southern planter (on Cooper River); also a merchant and president of Cong. Beth Elohim. Exc.+. (4) Plus four short one page penned notes all to Leeser from various subscribers 1852 through 1859 ordering books, bibles, subscriptions to "Occident." Total seven letters.
