and among the most well-known publishers of general literature and fiction of his day; noted for many famous editions (including the very first American edition of Charles Dickens' "Christmas Tales"). Also president of the most important Jewish congregation of Phila. and close friend of Isaac Leeser. There obviously was no chicanery afoot when he billed the conger. Of which he was President an incongruous $1.80 for work by his firm. Fancy, printed invoice of his firm "A. HART, LATE CAREY & HART…CHESTNUT STREET…PHILADELPHIA" March 1, 1852. Addressed to: "THE HEBREW CONGR. MIKVEH ISRAEL" for "binding four Jewish prayer [books] and marked "RECEIVED PAYMENT" with fine personal autograph signature "A. HART" as the "Parnass" ("President") of that congregation. Billhead includes long list of various books (and retail prices) published by his printing firm. Exc.+. (Accompanied with lengthy bio sketch of Hart's life and career).
