JULIUS EICHBERG (1824-1893). Two different original theater playbills / broadsides for the renowned "BOSTON MUSEUM," that city's most well-known theater during the American Civil War era. Each 5 ½ x 14; each blank on reverse. Bold, fancy, multi-style typefaces with centers of each broadside bearing Eichberg's credits. (1) Advertising June 11, 1864 "FAREWELL BENEFIT OF JOSEPHINE ORTON" (and others) in performance "PRIDE OF THE MARKET!" listing all actors and in center "During the evening the orchestra under the direction of Mr. JULIUS EICHBERG will perform brilliant selection of new music"; lower section advertising plays scheduled for following weeks. (2) Advertising show for August 15, 1864 "THE HUNCHBACK" listing all actors and details etc.; bold central heading (in French) announcing that JULIUS EICHBERG, CHEF D'ORCHESTRE…who will be assisted by an orchestra augmented for the ensuing season composed of most select available talent." Both in excellent condition; minor aging, one faint damp stain on edge of August broadside. As will be quickly realized from the accompanied bio sketches, Eichberg was a musical prodigy with fabulous background; later became Supervisor of Music for entire public school system of Boston; published numerous musical collections and composed many songs of artistic merit and various operettas, all well received.
