Includes 76+ on very fancy, profusely printed large letterheads of the "NATIONAL LIBERAL IMMIGRATION LEAGUE / NEW YORK" with printed listing of officers and committees; all letters signed by "NISSIM BEHAR" founder of that society and "Managing Director." All letters addressed to LOUIS E. LEVY (1846-1919) noted Jewish communal leader, famous U.S. chemist, inventor, editor of Jewish periodicals and a special engraving / printing process known as "Levytype" which permitted newspapers to print photographs (first to receive a patent for that important innovation). These typed letters coverer a vast amount of information pertaining to "League" matters and immigration…PLUS group of seven typed letters on fancy printed letterhead of the "FEDERATION OF JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS / NEW YORK" also with printed names of directors and various officers. That society also founded by Nissim Behar. Each of letters also to Louis Levy and signed by Behar. Includes a printed broadside by the society (in dual language, Hebrew/English). In addition, there are a large group of typed letters (also signed) not on printed letterheads, but also of the same era and with same names of Behar and Levy involved about society and immigration matters. Also includes an 8 page pamphlet published by "Nat'l Liberal Immigration League, NY" "RESTRICTIVE IMMIGRATION BILLS" (1909) and 12 page pamphlet published by U.S. House of Reps. 1909 "Bill to Further Regulate the Immigration of Aliens into U.S." Plus telegrams and other peripheral documents, letters and interesting newspaper clippings from the period regarding these same matters. This vast collection (all exc. condition!) not merely important, historical American Judaica, but represents basic "raw materials" for a diligent historian and researcher. Accompanied with fine bio sketches of Behar and Levy. Many American Jewish leaders did not approve of Behar's public meetings, protests and "intense propaganda;" he soon attained a high profile in American Jewry, expounding the idea that political organizations should speak for them, thus founding the "League."
