Photograph of the original artwork of the special 50 cent souvenir piece minted for the opening of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, designed by Jacques Schnier with obverse showing a grizzly bear and reverse depicted the bridge. The image is inscribed and signed “With sincere regards to Mr. Earnest R. Weinstrom Jacques Schnier.” Fine. These coins were struck at the San Francisco mint around November, 1936. The grizzly bear featured in the coin design by Jacques Schnier is said to be a compilation of various grizzly bears located in the Oakland and San Francisco zoos, and the design was intended to symbolize California's gaining of freedom from Mexico (the California Republic that existed between the area's secession from Mexico and its become a state was also called the Bear Flag Republic).
