COTTON, Charles Stanhope (1843-1909) Naval Admiral. Served from the Civil War through the Spanish American War where he was the scout who reported the arrival of Admiral Cervera, and after the destruction of Cervera’s squadron rescued nearly 700 men of the Spanish cruisers Infanta Maria Teresa and the Almirante Oquendo.Manuscript Letter Signed, “C.S. Cotton” Commander U.S.N., 2p. quarto, U.S.S. Mohican, 3d Rate Navy Yard, Mare Island, May 6, 1891, addressed to Bessie Curran of San Francisco, it reads in part: “...I have to say that your brother is now absent from this ship without leave, and liable to arrest for that offense, for which he is amenable to the law. Should he remain absent ten days, he will be declared a deserter, and as such he will be subject to arrest and trial by a general court-martial and upon conviction probably to confinement in prison. I have not the power to discharge him, and could take no action in his case during his absence; also, as the case stands, I could not now approve or recommend his discharge, as he has acted in open defiance to the law governing such cases, and is liable to the penalty therefore...” VG.
