Approximate five gallon storage jar, attributed to Collin Rhodes Factory, Shaws Creek area, c. 1850, unsigned, bulbous form. Heavy double dipped glaze application to upper third, has provided some handsome drips to lower side. A very skilled potters work. An important example piece of Rhodes. Chips to 3/4s of rim, lug handles are complete and intact with no restoration. Jar has stable crack running three quarters from rim. Found at an Edgefield estate, the owner had discarded the jar as junk, fresh to the market. Size: 15" tall, 43-½" at widest point.
