Autograph letter signed, "John Smylie", 2p., legal, Wilmington [NC], Sept. 28, 1825, with integral postally sent cover to brother, Rev. James Smylie, Centerville P.O., Amite Co., Mississippi. In part, "Alexander Shaw is in company with me, and wishes to lay out $1000 in Slaves. We have been here a few days and find none in the market of the description we want, and not more than two of any description. We intend starting in an hour towards the East. I find that they ask for young fellows from $450 to $500. It is a troublesome business and would be glad soon to get through with it."; "Cotton sells in Fayetteville at 13 & 14 cents. Bad crops of corn & cotton this year where I have been. Last evening a man arrived here from Georgia who carried out some negroes and have sold all on a credit, and at a low price." Overall VG+.
