Partially pre-printed document signed, 2pp., 7 3/4 x 12 1/2," New York, March 3 1830. "The examination of Timothy Laban a black taken in the town of North Hempstead before Superintendent of the Poor of Queens County, the 3rd day of March 1830 ... says he was born in Pennsylvania a slave, his master Wickard Laban lived on the Schuylkill about 15 miles from Phila. during the Revolution. Tim. was impressed into the British services and compelled to drive a waggon for the army-after the battle of (B)randy Wine, the army came through New Jersey to Staten Island-he left them at Sandy Hook-got to North Hempstead and went to work as a free man-after being then 6 or 7 years at labor with different farmers he took the farm of Sam Mott Cornell and worked it on Shares for three years he had 1/3 of the produce and the owners 2/3 kept a team of horses 3 cows and fatted yearly 3 hogsplanted abt. 5 acres of com and sowed from 2 to 3 acres of rye Yearly had 1/3 of all the fresh Poultry kept house with his wife in the Kitchen and was found his firewood never paid taxes owned any land nor paid higher rent thatn Nine pounds a Year. Elizabeth Laban Wife of Tim. swears to all this facts stated by him in relation to working the farm Sam Mott Cornell in Shares-Catherine Cornell Dughter of Sam Mott Cornell Testifies to Tims living on her fathers farm as Stated by him she is not certain about the time but thinks it was not less than three years. Upon due consideration of the facts and circumstances stated in the preceding examination, the said Timothy Laban is adjudged and determined to be a pauper, chargeable to the town of North Hempstead.
