Autograph Letter Signed, from Margaret and Andrew Pauley of Columbia, South Carolina, 3p. quarto, June 19, 1830, with integral leaf addressed to David Roberts of Hempstead County, Arkansas Territory, and reads in part: “...I was very glad to hear that Ashley intends to act right. The way that they are about to swindle me will do them very little good if I can get to Georgia before any other person does. I have no doubt but I will succeed in getting a better title than I have if any person get there before I do. I think that I will do the best on the account of my having a bill of Sale to the Negroes. George Dooley is in this country. I have been uneasy for fear he might go on to Georgia and try to do something in this business, but I do not think any person will attempt to do anything. I was told that the Negroes were run from No. Carolina here from under an Execution and was put in the hands of Pittelo to run off and sell for what he could. Others say he bought them in Columbia and W.A. Johnson was Security to the notes and witness to the Bill of Sale, and I think when I get to the people, that is the original owners, I will be certian to prevail in some way. I do not know whether Dooley knows anything about the place where they came from or not. If he does he might go on there and try to do something...” About VG.
