Autograph Letter Signed, "AM Burton" 1-1/2p. quarto, June 23, 1843, B Ford, being his retained copy of a correspondance with Doctor S.N. Johnston, and reads in part: "…recently (today) come to my knowledge Mr. Hill informs me upon inquiry of him that when speaking of my family you said 'you have been informed and it was reported that I was sued for about thirty four thousand dollars & that all the property here belonged to my children.' I was utterly astonished to hear hat you had permitted yourself to have this conversation…It is true that I have been sued as the security of Jas. R. Dodge Esqr for about one hundred & forty dollars & interest…I have only to say that there are in my possession about twenty or thirty negroes given by the late AR Fulewider to my children, but more in number than value & three or four thousand acres of land on which there is no incumberance…A gentleman of high character and well acquainted with my condition in life in a proceeding in equity made oath that I was worth a clear state of at least forty or fifty thousand dollars - this estimate is not high…" VG.
