Disturbing group of two slave bills of sale pertaining to the slave woman Maria and her young son Charles, includes: Slave bill of sale signed “James Costello” 1p. quarto, and reads “Received Augusta 9th February 1847 from Lewis Lovell, seven hundred dollars for two negroes Maria a woman about twenty three years old and her son Charles about three years old which negroes I warrant & defend against all claims of any & every person...& also warrant them sound in every respect whatsoever...” VG....plus; Manuscript Document Signed, “Lewis Lovell” 1p. quarto, Augusta, Georgia, January 1, 1851, and reads “Recd of Andrew J. Miller seven hundred dollars in full payment for a negro woman slave named Maria, about twenty eight years old, and her son Charles about seven years old (now in the possession of Thomas Faut); the title to which I promise to warrant and defend to him against all claims and incumbrances against me only...” Fine.
