Excellent original Antebellum poem entitled “Freedom to the Slave” and signed “L.A.B.”, 2p. folio, it reads in part: “... Hear ye those accents of despair,/ Crying ‘Save, save, oh save!’/ List ye! His the dying prayer/ Of the poor bleeding slave./ See you that flowing purple stream/ In one unbroken wave,/ Over the land - no spectral dream/ The life blood of the slave./ For vengeance sure, that blood will cry,/ Thou haste, oh haste to save!/ Cry loud, spare not, for God on high/ Will hear the mourning slave./ See you that dreadful, dismal place,/ That living moral grave,/ The country’s bane, the church’s disgrace/ The land that holds the slave./ Where Freedom’s voice is never heard/ In favour of the slave;/ Where Liberty’s sons are called insane/ Because they love the slave/ Where mother’s groans, and children’s fears/ Their master’s pity crave;/ Where degradation, grief and fears/ Are portioned to the slave./ Where Jesus love must not be held,/ His willingness to save;/ And to bestow the ‘Spirits gold’/ To the poor dying slave....Dow we posses the Saviour’s love?/ Do we His blessings crave?/ Are our treasures laid up above?/ Than we must love the slave./...Hail welcome day! When Gods own hand/ Shall close their yawning graves,/ And America’s bright happy land/ Release three million slaves...” Fine.
