I have crossed the ‘big waters’ and am in the Prairie Land of the West...B. is a small city on the banks of the Missouri, a beautiful place, society good and thus far I like very much. I am teaching a ladies school. The name of the school ‘Pleasant Retreat Seminary.’ There are three teachers. I have the Higher Department; Miss Pitkin the Primary,; Miss Hall Music Teacher. They are fine ladies...There is a great deal of attention paid us by the citizens both young and old...I left for Hartford remained there eleven days only, as Mr. Bell came there for some teachers and Miss Swift introduced me to him, as he was in a hurry to come home, I was obliged to leave immediately. Mr. B. is the Pastor of the Presbyterian Church here a very fine man, though as good as he is, he is a Slave Holder, but that is what every one is here, as it is a Slave State. We have them to wait upon us, great isn’t it...I have visited the Falls, and all connected with or around them both in the American and Canada sides, the scenery is sublimely beautiful...” Fine.
