A rare war-date Union army Black enlistment form, 2pp. 4to., partly-printed Ft. Smith, Arkansas, December 22, 1863 being the voluntary enlistment for Stephen R. Smith into, Co. B, 11th USCT. Signed twice by Smith with his mark as well as by A.D. Tenney, Asst. Surgeon and J.J. Scoles of the 67th USCT. The 11th was recruited solely with former slaves from Louisiana and Arkansas and the regiment served at Fort Smith, Ark from Dec. 1863 through Nov. 1864. They twice saw battle during the war, once at Fort Smith in August 1864 and again at Bog's Mill in January 1865. Smith's African American Civil War Memorial plaque number is B-25. Fine.
