The lessons promote the Southern view as evidence by the reading lesson of “Uncle Ned” who was “a good old darkey and loved his master well ... They (the Yankees) told Ned that he should free and live the white folks ... but he soon found that they did not tell him the truth ... so one dark night he slipped awayand kept going till he got back to his kind master ... ah massah, dem Yankee no be good to poor nigger, can’t stay wid em.” Scarce item/
