Autograph Document Signed “W.H. Harris Trial Justice” as well as by seventeen (17) other men, 1p. folio, October 6, 1886, Farmsville, South Carolina, addressed “To his Honor T.B. Fraser presiding Judge” and reads “We the undersigned citizens of Union County are personally acquainted with Robert Gaffney now in Jail at Union Court House awaiting sentence from your Honor for stealing grain from the field having been found guilty of said crime on the 5th day of Oct. 1886 would ask Your Honor to be as lenient as possible in passing sentence on the said Gaffney from the fact that we have known him for several years during which time he has conducted himself peaceably, quietly, and honestly so far as we know. He is industrious, pays his debts and is considered above the average in this respect among the colored race. He is poor has a wife and four small children and your petitioners most earnestly prsy your kind consideration...” VG.
