War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed, "William H. Broughton" (1846-1882) Capt. Co. D, 16th Maine Vols., POW Weldon Railroad, 2p. quarto, ink, Camp near Black & White Station on the South side R.R., 8 miles from Petersburg, Virginia, April 26, 1865, and reads in part: "...I have been heartily disgusted with some of our Gen. Officers lately. One day we marched 24 miles and were only 12 miles from the place we started from in the morning. This is our corps which I am speaking of now, all the rest of the Army has been in camp for almost two weeks, but we have been fubbing around doing nothing...The melancholly death of our beloved President affected the Army deeply. I hope the assassin will be caught..." VG.
